Growers and terraces
A sea of lemons above a sea of blue
From the road the Amalfi Coast may appear to be all colourful houses and boats. Above the villages, dry-stone terraces and lemon pergolas tell a different story: generations of farmers making productive ground from steep slopes. The structure matters. Trees are trained, fruit is protected from wind and weather, and the harvest requires skill rather than simply shaking a branch.
This is labour-intensive landscape agriculture. Walk slowly through a permitted farm visit rather than treating every grove as a public path. Ask about the grower, the age of the pergolas and the work of picking and sorting; those details make the drink far more interesting than a postcard of yellow fruit.
Into the glass: Fresh lemonade and a little grated zest; citrus flavour begins long before any alcohol.
