A guide to the place, not a sales pitch

Nebbiolo in the hills. Vermouth in the city. Good food everywhere.

Piedmont is not one large wine appellation. Barolo, Barbaresco, Gavi, Asti and Langhe identify different places, grapes and production rules. Follow the label rather than assuming every Piedmont red is Nebbiolo.

Vineyards on the edge of the Alps

The hills southeast of Turin are a patchwork of vineyard slopes, villages, woods and farmsteads. Around Alba, the direction of the slope, the temperature of the season and the choices of each grower help change the wine. There is no single Piedmont soil or flavour.

The UNESCO-listed Vineyard Landscape of Piedmont includes specific cultural areas of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, not every vineyard in the region. UNESCO status celebrates a landscape and history, not an individual bottle’s quality. Start by looking for the names of villages and vineyards, then consider producer and vintage.

Nebbiolo

Barolo: Nebbiolo with patience and perfume

Barolo is a red DOCG made from Nebbiolo in a legally delimited area near Alba. The combination of pale garnet appearance, floral scent, high acidity and firm tannin surprises newcomers. Rose, cherry, herbs and savoury earthy notes are possible, but a tasting note is not a promise.

Barolo has specific ageing and release requirements. Its named geographical mentions identify vineyard areas; they are not official taste rankings. La Morra is often described as more fragrant and Serralunga as more structured, but site, grower and year matter more than stereotypes. Compare a good Langhe Nebbiolo before stretching the budget.

Nebbiolo

Barbaresco: a different home for Nebbiolo

Barbaresco is a separate Nebbiolo DOCG with its own zone, ageing requirements and vineyards. It is sometimes introduced as a lighter or earlier-drinking sibling to Barolo; this is a tendency, not a rule. A firmly structured Barbaresco can be impressive after years in the cellar.

Look for specific vineyard names such as Asili and Rabajà, and for producers including cooperative cellars with deep roots in the area. Comparing bottles at similar age and with the same dish is more informative than assuming one appellation is always superior.

Alba · Asti · Nizza

Barbera

Barbera: the red that loves supper

Barbera often produces lively red wines with bright acidity and relatively modest tannin compared with Nebbiolo. The styles range from juicy and immediate to more concentrated, oak-influenced bottles. Deep colour does not automatically imply aggressive structure.

Barbera d’Alba and Barbera d’Asti are distinct origins. Nizza DOCG is a further specific designation for Barbera. These wines reward practical buying: for a tomato-rich pasta or pizza, a pleasing Barbera may offer a better match than a very young and tannic Barolo.

Dogliani · Alba · Langhe

Dolcetto · Freisa

Dolcetto and Freisa: the other local reds

Despite its sweet-sounding name, Dolcetto is usually made into dry red wine. It can be dark-fruited, savoury and gently bitter at the finish. Dogliani is an important area for Dolcetto, with its own appellation identity, while Dolcetto d’Alba has separate geographical rules.

Freisa is another old local grape, capable of distinctive peppery or floral red wines. These bottles deserve their own place at the table rather than being treated simply as low-priced stand-ins for Nebbiolo.

Gavi · Roero · Langhe

Cortese · Arneis

Gavi and Arneis: white Piedmont has a story

Gavi is associated with the Cortese grape and typically produces dry white wine: citrus, orchard fruit and a gently nutty edge can make it lovely with fish and vegetables. Gavi is a protected area, not another name for all Piedmontese white wine.

Arneis is associated especially with the Roero hills, but Langhe-labelled Arneis also appears. It can show pear, stone fruit and a rounded texture while remaining fresh. For a buyer who does not enjoy high-tannin reds, these wines offer a genuine way into the region.

Asti · Canelli · Santo Stefano Belbo

Moscato Bianco

Moscato d’Asti: a sparkling ending

Moscato d’Asti is characteristically aromatic, gently sparkling and sweet, generally with lower alcohol than many dry table wines. Asti is a separately regulated sparkling style. Neither should be confused with dry Gavi simply because all originate in Piedmont.

Sweetness has a purpose at the table: peaches, hazelnut cake and simple pastries can find a charming match. Read the full bottle specification, and never sell an aromatic dry wine as sweet simply because it smells of fruit.

Torino · café culture · historic piazzas

Vermouth di Torino · coffee · aperitifs

Turin: vermouth, cafés and aperitivo

Turin helped shape the history of Italian vermouth and the aperitivo. Vermouth di Torino is a protected geographical indication for aromatised wine with its own rules; any generic sweet vermouth is not automatically entitled to the name. Rosso and Bianco styles can vary considerably in herbs, spice and sweetness.

Piedmont is more than wine: café counters, espresso, chocolate-and-hazelnut gianduiotti and grissini are part of its culture. A simple aperitif, or a very good coffee, can tell a story without requiring an expensive bottle.

Food-and-wine pairings

Truffles, hazelnuts and the Piedmontese table

Alba’s truffle traditions, Piedmontese hazelnuts, tajarin, vitello tonnato, agnolotti del plin and bagna càuda explain why wines here are often understood with a meal. Barbera’s acidity can revive a rich sauce; a more mature Nebbiolo may meet slow-roasted meat.

The region’s cheeses include Robiola, Castelmagno and regional Toma. Delicate white-truffle pasta need not meet an aggressively tannic young red: an older Nebbiolo or carefully chosen white can allow the aroma to shine. Coffee, mineral water and sparkling grape juice deserve a place at the table too.
