Coffee varieties: why the name on the bag sometimes matters.

Names such as Bourbon, Typica, Gesha, SL28 and Catuaí describe genetic lines within coffee species. Variety shapes potential, but place, farming, processing and roasting decide how that potential is expressed.

Section 01

Genetics sets the possibilities. Everything else gets a say.

Varieties differ in plant shape, productivity, disease resistance, cherry characteristics and flavour potential. They are useful context, not a guarantee of quality.
