01 · England

Sparkling wine, Bacchus and the rising confidence of still English wine

An unexpected vineyard country

England is building a distinctive wine identity. Traditional-method sparkling wine made mainly from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier has brought international attention, while still wines from Bacchus to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are becoming increasingly compelling. Sussex, Kent, Essex and Hampshire have scale, but Devon and Cornwall deserve a closer look for their maritime conditions, determined producers and memorable vineyard visits.

Our dedicated guide goes further into West Country estates, the making of sparkling wine, the difference between locally grown fruit and wine produced by a regional winery, and what to drink with coastal food. We have verified English-wine bottles from elsewhere in England, but no currently verified Cornwall- or Devon-grown wine offer in our affiliate catalogue: the distinction matters.

02 · The West Country

Cider orchards, perry and the art of distilling fruit

The apple has its own story

The western counties have been growing cider apples for generations. Somerset, Devon and Herefordshire are associated with orchard-based cider and perry traditions, but different apple varieties, yeast choices, fermentation methods and ageing can lead to bright fresh cider, tannic farmhouse styles or richer, sweeter versions.

Cider brandy takes the journey a stage further: fermented apples are distilled and often matured in wood. It deserves to be tasted as its own drink, not treated as a curiosity. A dry cider beside a cheese board, or a little apple brandy after supper, makes a particularly British pairing.

03 · Devon and Cornwall

Plymouth, Salcombe and the new distillers beyond the traditional centres

From coastal gin to Dartmoor whisky

The South West has more to offer than a vineyard view. Plymouth has a historic gin style and a long-established distilling identity; Salcombe has become closely associated with coastal gin; and Dartmoor whisky brings a different, grain-led perspective to a landscape better known for granite tors and walking routes.

Devon also has innovative rum blenders. It is worth distinguishing where rum is blended and bottled from where its raw spirit was distilled—those are not always the same place. The reward for the curious drinker is a selection of very different styles from a relatively small part of Britain.

04 · Scotland and Wales

From Scottish regional differences to new Welsh makers

A wider world of British whisky

No journey through Britain’s drinks is complete without Scotch whisky. Islay, Speyside, the Highlands and the Lowlands all have stories worth following, but a region is a starting point rather than a guarantee of flavour. Peat, fermentation, still design, cask history and the producer’s decisions explain more than a simple map legend.

Welsh single malt is another important chapter, with Penderyn and Aber Falls helping broaden the idea of where British whisky can be made. Our dedicated Scottish destination and whisky guides let visitors go much deeper without making this UK overview overwhelming.

05 · Northern Ireland

The northern home of Irish whiskey

Northern Ireland brings its own history to the UK’s drinks landscape. County Antrim is home to Bushmills, whose Irish single malt is a distinct tradition from Scotch whisky. In County Down, Rademon Estate’s Shortcross Rye & Malt is an example of modern Irish whiskey distilled, matured and bottled at the same Northern Irish site. Neither is called Scotch: where a drink is made and which rules govern its name matter.

Take this as a different chapter of the island of Ireland’s whiskey story, best enjoyed alongside a fuller meal, water and the knowledge of who made the spirit.
