South Africa, a new look at the Cape

The Cape can be dramatic: mountains rising above rows of vines, coastal wind and a wine culture older and more varied than any single signature grape. Follow the Winelands through Chenin Blanc, Pinotage and some of the country’s most characterful reds, with a bottle to explore at every stop.

01 · Stellenbosch and the Winelands

History, Cabernet and the South African signature of Pinotage

Wine with a mountain backdrop

Around Stellenbosch the Cape folds into a landscape of steep mountains, valleys and centuries of winegrowing history. Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style blends can be especially successful, but variety and site are just as important as an old estate name. Different slopes, sea breezes and soils create a wide range of character.

Pinotage deserves attention of its own. Bred in South Africa from Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, it can range from fresh and fruit-led to richly savoury, particularly when carefully made. A side-by-side taste with a structured Cape blend is a wonderful way to move beyond the clichés. Serve with grilled mushrooms, smoky vegetables or lamb from the braai.

Try Pinotage with smoky barbecue, or a Cabernet-led blend with roasted lamb.

02 · Swartland

Dryland vineyards, old vines and adventurous growers

Where Chenin Blanc finds another voice

North of Cape Town, the Swartland is associated with rolling, often dry-farmed vineyards, rugged landscapes and winemakers who have helped redefine perceptions of South African wine. Chenin Blanc is a particular treasure: it can be light and brisk, or richly textured and layered, depending on vine age, site and approach.

Syrah also thrives here, with producers making wines that balance ripe fruit with pepper, herbal notes and freshness. Try a Chenin with grilled fish, roast chicken or a lightly spiced vegetable dish; follow it with Syrah beside richer, savoury food. This is a region that rewards looking past the variety name to the people and place.

03 · Constantia and the wider Cape

A long history, cool breezes and fresh whites

The maritime side of South African wine

Near Cape Town, Constantia gives the wine story a different mood: lush valleys, older estates and cooling maritime influences. Its historic reputation for sweet wine is remarkable, but today the region and the wider coastal Cape also have fresh whites, thoughtful reds and a compelling food culture.

Sauvignon Blanc can be vivid and aromatic, particularly with fish, salads and fresh herbs. As our inventory grows we can explore the Cape’s legendary sweet wines and traditional-method sparkling wines in greater depth. For now, we concentrate on bottles our retailer feeds actually support rather than linking to unrelated wines.
