01 · Barossa and South Australia
Old vines, generous fruit and a strong sense of place
Why Shiraz became an Australian classic
A short journey from Adelaide brings you to Barossa wine country, famous for deep, fruit-rich Shiraz and some extraordinary surviving old vines. Yet “big Australian red” tells only half the story. Differences in vineyard age, elevation and winemaking can give wines freshness and definition as well as power.
Nearby McLaren Vale has its own coastal influence and is especially interesting for Grenache and blends alongside Shiraz. At the table, these reds love grilled vegetables, slow-cooked meat and mature cheeses. Penfolds, Torbreck and S.C. Pannell offer different ways into the South Australian red-wine conversation.
Barossa Shiraz with barbecue or roast lamb; Grenache blends with chargrilled aubergine.
